This page is largely based on formations, sounds, and letter recognition of letters of the alphabet. It includes a Contract/Worksheet (mainly written tasks), and some Website Tasks (mainly oral tasks). The tasks can be used together or separately. Tasks can be done individually, in groups, with a buddy, and/or as a whole class.
The pdf A-Z Contracts/Worksheets, (as well as notes to the teacher), can be found towards the bottom of this page, (below the kids tasks). I have simply done things back to front here, where the kids tasks are shown first, and the notes and the actual contracts/worksheets for the teacher to download, are shown last.
Click on the images to make them bigger, and make sure the sound is up for the audio clips.

The whole point of the related tasks, was for me to have something in place which allowed some of the kids I teach, something to go on to which is simple, but which focuses on the importance of letter formation, letter recognition and letter sounds. It also had to be able to be done not only with teacher support, but also for kids to be able to do parts of it either independently and/or in pairs/groups/ buddy system used with older kids supporting them, etc.
This also lends itself to having everything related to these tasks, in the one place for juniors, should e-Learning have to come into play, (such as with sickness, physical distancing, lockdowns etc).
Of course, how you use the tasks is completely up to you, and you can do them in any order you like. You know the kids best, so feel free to use them in any way which best suits your class/child.
For me, the way I intended to use them was/is the Contracts/Worksheets are largely done in written form, and the Website tasks (shown above on this page) are largely done orally. So, for example, when I am focussing on the letter Aa, I do the Contract/Worksheet based on letter Aa, as well as the Website Tasks also based on that same letter. However, as mentioned above, you can use them anyway that bests suits you and your class/child.
These have/are being written mainly for use in the Years 1-4 areas, although there are no set rules.
Below are a few ideas.
- A short lesson on a focused letter is done with the whole class, (or groups). The focus could be on the letter, the sound and the correct formation of one particular letter.
- Using an A-Z contract/worksheet which focusses on the same particular letter and sound that was focused on with the whole class. The contracts/worksheets (either in part or full), could be done with the teacher/teacher aide, as a whole class, in a group or paired situation, independently, (or a mix of all of them).
- From that contract/worksheet, they could then go onto the A-Z Website Tasks, which is also based on the same letter and sound that was done as a whole class, and on the contract/worksheet. As with the contracts/worksheets, the A-Z Website Tasks could also be done in groups, individually, as a whole class etc. These activities also work well in a buddy system, where older kids from another class take the support role.
Possible ideas based on the A-Z Website Tasks (largely oral).
- Say the letter and sound of the letter shown, and say whether it is an upper or lower case.
- Look at the 4 images. Say what the pictures are, (they all start with the focus letter). Then hover over the image or click on the image and say the word for that image.
- Look at the words (in blue). Can they match the words with the pictures?
- Click on the audio clip, (shown above the images). Listen to the audio clip, (remember to have the sound turned up). Then listen to the clip again and follow the prompts. It will just require the child to say the letters, sounds and words as read by a child (all orally). I tell my kids to listen to it twice.
- Click on the video clip, sing along and follow the prompts. It focusses on sounds and words of the focused letter for that section. For those who want a bit extra, these clips also show sign language for the letters, (watch the guys hands in the clip). NB though, that the sign language is American Sign Language, not New Zealand Sign Language.
- Based on the focused letter, the child makes up their own flash card based on the focused letter, which includes the letter (upper and lower case), and at least 1 picture and word.

- The more the kids do these, the more independent they become. It also puts them into a leadership role to help support others who are less independent.

The audio clips above have been recorded by kids themselves. I thought I'd do this part a bit differently, and actually have kids helping and reading/speaking to the kids who are doing the tasks. Many thanks to the following kids who helped do the recordings for me in 2021. The kids were: Kostello, Year 8 and Ophelia, Year 8 from Pukeatua School (Waikato), and Phoenix (Year 6) and Robbie (Year 6) from David Henry School in Tokoroa.

- The blank circles beside the numbers on the contracts/worksheets, are so the child/teacher can tick off tasks as they are completed. They could also be used where the teacher ticks/marks the circles to tell the child which tasks have to be done, (if only doing part of the sheet).
Each worksheet/contract also has a teacher checklist, which lists all the tasks on the sheets, as well as the tasks shown at the top of this webpage, (so you can track who has done what).
The below contracts/worksheets could also be enlarged to A3 size if you wanted them to have larger print for tracing etc.
